Voodoo Queen Tour

Voodoo & Marie Laveau

Initially brought to Louisiana by enslaved West Africans and strengthened by Haitian immigrants after the bloodstained revolt of 1791, the dark spirits of voodoo encompass New Orleans. Combining African, Caribbean, and Catholic elements, “voodoo” conjures images of headless chickens, shrieking shamans, and malevolent serpents.

But, there’s more to this ancient practice than half-dead zombies and dolls with pins through their eyes. On this tour, you’ll learn about Marie Laveau, New Orleans’ unrivaled Voodoo Queen. The city adored and feared Laveau for her herbal medicines, midwife services, exorcisms, dark rituals, and sacrifices. Many tried to overthrow her, but she was too powerful, and all challengers perished. Come with us as we visit her original homestead.

In addition, we’ll visit Congo Square, located in Louis Armstrong Park in the Treme, the first neighborhood for free people of color. These hallowed grounds were where enslaved people gathered to share recipes, stories, and music on their day off. It’s also here that gave birth to New Orleans’ gift to the world, jazz. We’ll also stop by an authentic voodoo shop where you can learn more about the concepts covered on the tour.
